In his book, Start with Why, author Simon Sinek argues that the most successful organizations can effectively understand and articulate their overall mission and purpose—their big “why”, if you will. They clearly understand and can articulate why they exist, and they get others around them to support their vision.

God made his overall vision, his big “why” for the church known in scripture. In our series on The Story: The Bible as One Continuous Story of God and God’s People, we followed God’s big redemption project for all of humankind – rescuing humanity from sin and death and renewing the whole creation in Jesus Christ. The Church is called to carry on this mission and be part of this redemptive work. Our local church is also part of this mission, and we carry out this work of God’s mission here in our community. Over the next year, our church will be participating in the Unglued Church Project, an initiative of our presbytery to assist churches in discerning their big “why” – their overarching mission and purpose. The hope is that this clarity of vision will inform our specific ministry activities and guide us in the overall direction God desires us to go. You’ll be hearing more about our church’s progress in this process, and at key points along the way, you will be given the opportunity to contribute your ideas and feedback. Please pray for our Unglued leadership team. Pray also for God to make clear our church’s big “why” – our overarching purpose that is part of God’s overarching plan for the renewal of the whole world! “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

Blessings,

Hilary
